How to Apply

Get your school fit and funded. The Round 3 funding opportunity for the Presidential Youth Fitness Program funding is closed. Awards will be announced on or before March 20, 2015 for implementation beginning the 2015–2016 school year.

On Your Mark, Get Set . . .

Here’s what you’ll need to apply for funding to bring the supplemental resources of the Presidential Youth Fitness Program to your school. One application is required to be submitted for each school, unless all schools in a district are applying—then the district application can be used. Send an email to if you are interested in applying on behalf of a district. Round 3 applicants will be notified on or before March 20, 2015.

  • Determine Your Eligibility

    Is your school eligible? Public and private schools employing a certified physical education teacher are eligible to apply. Schools serving only students in grades K–2 or K–3 are not eligible. You must be able to use the web-hosted version of the FITNESSGRAM® software, which requires student information and assessment data to be stored on secure servers off-site.

  • Understand Your Commitment

    Read the terms and conditions. Know what funding covers, what it doesn’t, and what your obligations are if your school is funded.

  • Make Your Case

    Because schools that receive funding are expected to seek long-term support for the program (beyond year 3), you may need to make a case to your school administrators and staff for adopting PYFP. Here is a list to help you make your case.

  • Complete the Application Worksheet

    Gather the data, answer all the questions in the application worksheet, and write your budget and program narratives. Then simply copy your answers into your online application between Jan. 1 and Feb. 9, 2015.

  • Read and Sign the Web Hosting Memorandum of Understanding

    Your school’s principal and IT manager need to sign the Web Hosting Memorandum of Understanding. Keep a copy of the signed version on file. On the online application, you’ll be asked to submit the name and email of the agreeing representatives.

  • Get Sign-Off on Your Memo of Support

    Customize the Memo of Support template with your school’s information and then ask your school’s principal, physical education teacher, and IT manager to initial the memo.

  • Complete and Submit Your Online Application

    Complete and submit your online application between Jan. 1 and Feb. 9, 2015. Be sure to upload the Memo of Support with your application.

What’s Your Commitment?

  • Participate in Training

    Participate in training to learn how to use the FITNESSGRAM® software. Who: IT manager and physical educator(s)

  • Participate in Professional Development

    Participate in professional development. A seven-hour virtual course spread over two years and an hour-long sustainability webinar in Year 3. Who: physical educator(s)

  • Conduct the FITNESSGRAM® Assessment

    Conduct the FITNESSGRAM® assessment and enter student data. Who: physical educator(s)

  • Make Necessary Modifications

    Make modifications, as necessary, for students with disabilities. Like all youth, students with disabilities will benefit from lifelong engagement in physical activity and should have the opportunity to receive recognition for their achievements. FITNESSGRAM 10.x software allows use of user-defined exemption codes for one or more test items. Physical educators may decide that students without identified disabilities, such as those with asthma, also need modifications in one or more of the test categories or may choose to use the Brockport Physical Fitness Test. Use your professional judgment to make those determinations. You know your students best.

  • Recognize Your Students’ Achievements

    Recognize your students’ achievements in fitness and physical activity. Who: physical educator(s)

  • Confirm Further Participation

    Confirm your participation in Years 2 and 3. Who: person responsible

  • Complete the End-of-Year Report

    Please review your school’s policy for sharing aggregate data for end-of-year program reports. Schools must ensure they are in compliance with district policies for data submission. Required data includes, but may not be limited to, information supplied by a FITNESSGRAM® 10.x software–generated report. Failure to submit end-of-year reports may result in cancellation of support.

  • Repeat Each Year

    Repeat the following for years 2 and 3:

    • Participate in training
    • Participate in professional development
    • Conduct the FITNESSGRAM® assessment
    • Recognize your students’ achievements
    • Complete the end-of-year report
  • Secure Funds

    Be sure to secure funds for, or write into your annual budget, the costs for continuing the Presidential Youth Fitness Program. Who: Physical educator(s) and/or person responsible

What Happens if Your School Is Funded?

  • Materials distributed: April 15–May 31, 2015
  • Participation in required virtual training: May 1, 2015–February 28, 2016/2017
  • Submission of confirmation of year 2 and 3 participation: February 1–February 28, 2016/2017
  • Complete student FITNESSGRAM® assessment: By June 30, 2016/2017/2018
  • Annual school report submitted: By June 15, 2016/2017/2018
  • Order year 3 recognition items: January 1–April 28, 2018
